For many of today’s unemployed, the job-hunting landscape is a foreign one. Many employees never had to deal with Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn the last time they were searching for work. They never were expected to maintain blogs highlighting their career achievements. And they never had to worry about creating resumes with high-SEO value.

The Social Media Revolution

That’s all changed today. Younger job seekers take the world of social media for granted. It’s second nature for them to use LinkedIn or Facebook to hunt down job leads or connect to professionals who might help them land that key job interview. Blogs, Tweets, and online job boards aren’t the least bit confusing to those who’ve looked for employment in the last three to four years.

But for those who were employed until the great economic slowdown of 2008 and 2009? These are the folks struggling to discover where to search for jobs.

Fortunately, there’s a little secret about social media: They’re actually incredibly easy to master. Sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn have been designed to be easy to use; no instruction manual is needed for these sites.

For instance, job hunters hoping to search for employment with the help of LinkedIn simply must create a basic profile with their contact information and experience. Think of it as a slimmed-down online resume. Job hunters should then search the world of LinkedIn for familiar names, whether long-lost friends or professional business acquaintances. You never know which LinkedIn connection might alert you to an opening in the finance department in a small bank in the suburbs or a friend who is leaving a position that you might just be qualified for.

Job hunters can use Facebook and Twitter in much the same way. On Twitter, job hunters can search for people they know or who work in their fields. The goal is to create online relationships with people who can help job seekers land interviews or who can let hunters know when an unadvertised job opening has become available.

Expanding the Job Search

On Facebook, job hunters can include any positive information about themselves that’s appropriate. Maybe a recently fired accountant just completed a new training course and received a new certification. That job hunting accountant should put the information on Facebook. Then, all of this person’s followers will see that this is one job hunter who is being proactive in looking for new work. This might create a strong enough impression to encourage a fellow accountant to recommend the Facebook poster for a new opening.

The where to search for jobs question might seem like a daunting one today. But job seekers should remember that social media offers them a whole new outlet for landing their next job.
