First, the national unemployment rate in November finally dropped below 9 percent, hitting 8.6 percent. Then the Associated Press reported that unemployment applications dropped to their lowest levels since April of 2008.

Of course, none of this good news means that you can skip out on learning the important skill of how to job search.

The Challenges of Finding a Job

Even with the unemployment rate finally showing some signs of falling, the competition for most open jobs is still fierce. Economists surveyed by the Associated Press predicted that the national economy will grow by 2.4 percent in 2012. That’s an improvement from 2011, when it is likely that the economy grew by less than 2 percent.

That growth rate, though, doesn’t mean that the country’s unemployment problem is over. Far from it: It is still estimated that about 13 million people in the United States who want jobs remain unemployed.

This means that you have to continually brush up on how to get a job in today’s competitive hiring environment.

Online and Offline Job Search Skills

This all starts by searching the employment sites on a regular basis, looking for jobs that fit your skills and education. Don’t bother applying for jobs that are beyond your experience or skill level; the competition will be so fierce you’ll only be wasting your time.

How to job search also means reworking your resume. This is especially true if you haven’t had to look for a job in several years. You’ll want your resume to accurately reflect your most recent experience. You’ll especially want to include any tech skills that you may have added to your work toolbox over the last few years. Remember, hiring managers see a lot of resumes for job openings today. You want to make sure that your resume sells your strengths and work talents.

Sharpen Your Networking Skills

Learning how to find a job also means sharpening your networking skills, both online and offline. Attend after-hours business events to chat with industry professionals and remind them that you are actively looking for work. Update your LinkedIn profile so that it best highlights your skills, accomplishments, and employment goals. And reach out to former co-workers, supervisors, managers, and professors who might be able to recommend you to a hiring manager or clue you in on an upcoming job vacancy that hasn’t yet hit an employment website.

The secret to finding a job today is to tap as many resources as possible, through networking on social media sites and face-to-face. Networking skills have always been an important component of a professional job search.
