This ease of applying, though, might give job seekers false hope. You may be applying for dozens of jobs a day. But are you getting any responses to your online applications? You have two main choices when conducting an online job search. You can turn to the most popular job sites out there, places like Monster.com and Careerbuilder. Or you can search the smaller employment sites; sites dedicated to only your particular career.

But there is a downside here, too. The best job search sites are hardly a secret. Think of how many other job seekers are reading the same job listings that you are scanning? This competition makes it difficult for even qualified applicants to stand out. When applying for jobs at the country’s largest online job boards, you’ll often feel as if you are sending your resumes into a black hole where they simply disappear without comment.
Turning to Specialized Job Search Sites
But what about the smaller job search sites? Are these a better option when you’re searching for a job?
Again, these sites come with their own pluses and minuses. Job boards ran by associations or professional networks are good because they only run jobs designed for your particular field. They also attract fewer visitors, meaning that each job listing won’t be swarmed by hundreds of desperate job hunters. This can give you the chance to not only find jobs specific to your own field, but to also stand out more prominently when applying for these positions.

On the downside, many of these smaller, more specialized job boards don’t list a lot of open jobs. You can visit for a week straight and only find one listing for which you are qualified.
The best approach to running an online job search? A combination. Visit both the big job boards and the smaller, more specialized sites on a daily basis. This way, you’ll find a wide mix of jobs and gain the advantages of both types of online job boards.
