Savvy Job Search Advice: Be Wary of Shift Work

May 1, 2012

Job Hunt

In today’s challenging job market, it can be tempting to take the first offer of employment that comes along. But here’s some important job search advice: Be careful of accepting just any job. It could be dangerous to your health.

Take shift work; many people prefer working late at night, when the rest of the world sleeps. They find this time relaxing, and enjoy avoiding the bustle of normal working hours. But for other people, shift work can result in poor health, lack of sleep and depression.

The Dangers of Landing the Wrong Job

When you are looking for a job, then, you need to take a close look at your own personality and decide whether a certain job will work for you.

A recent story by the BBC News reported that shift workers who get too little sleep or who sleep during the wrong time of day may face a greater risk of both diabetes and obesity, two health problems that are far too common in the United States today.

The Right Job for Your Personality

Of course, in your attempt to find a career, you might run into work other than shift work that might be detrimental to your health. You might be offered a lucrative position at a busy advertising firm. But the work here might involve so much stress that it negatively impacts your work, causing you to lose sleep, eat poorly, and become depressed. Depending on your personality type, you might do better to continue your career search until you find a job in a lower-key workplace.

Or maybe the opposite is true. Perhaps you thrive in high-pressure, high-activity workplaces. If you find work in a job environment that is too low-key, you might struggle to retain interest in your work. You might get bored. That, too, can lead to medical problems such as depression and over-eating.

The Professional Job Search

The key here is to conduct a professional job search that leads you to the positions that are best suited to your personality and temperament. Remember, no amount of money will be enough to chase away your depression over working in an environment that isn’t suited to your personality type.
