The social media job search is an important tool for today’s job hunters. Through sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, job seekers can instantly tell their network of business associates that they are looking for new work. This can lead to hot job leads that don’t show up on the online job boards.

But the social media job search can also lead to big problems for those who don’t use sites such as Facebook or Twitter in a professional manner.

Here’s the simple rule: Never post anything on these sites that will embarrass you. You don’t want recruiters or human-resources managers to find pictures of you hoisting two empty beer bottles in your fists. You don’t want them to find rude jokes on your Twitter page.

Never post anything on a social media site that you think might hurt you if a recruiter found it.

No Cut-and-Paste Responses

The proliferation of online job postings has made it easy for job seekers to quickly apply for dozens of jobs in a day. Unfortunately, it has also made job seekers lazy.

Too many applicants simply cut-and-paste the same resume and cover letter for every online job to which they apply. A much more effective approach is for job seekers to write a personalized letter for every job listing to which they apply. They should also tweak their resumes so that they, too, are customized for a specific job opening.

This takes more time, but customized cover letters and resumes increase the odds of job seekers gaining job interviews.

Show Up on Time

If you do get a job interview, show up on time. This sounds obvious, but too many job seekers arrive to their job interviews late. This infuriates human-resources professionals and managers, and will get your interview off to an unfortunate start. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to your job interview.
