You can use this website to gather information about companies that you are interested in working for by changing the search function to “companies” and typing in the name of the company. If you like what you read, you should click the “Follow” button so you can keep up with the latest news, job openings, and hires at the company.

Connect with HR or Hiring Managers

Once you select companies of interest, you can also use LinkedIn to research and connect with human resources or hiring managers at the company. With a bit of investigation, you can often locate someone directly associated with the position you would be most interested in – even if a position is not open at the time. Many of these managers have their email addresses in their profiles so you can send a brief email describing your interest directly to them with your resume attached.

Most HR or hiring managers appreciate the proactive contact. You have to make sure that you are qualified for the position that you are inquiring about as the manager may become irritated and toss your information.

Get Referrals to the Hiring Manager

If you can’t find a direct path to the hiring manager, you can still use LinkedIn to make contact. If you have the name, you can determine if you are connected to that person or if one of your own connections has a connection. You don’t want to go too far out – generally a second-degree contact is as distant as you want to go. Asking for referrals from people who are too far removed has a low success rate.

By asking for a referral, you can get your resume in front of the person making the hiring decision. You also get the benefit of someone vouching for you to the manager which can only help your case.

Use the Apply Function

LinkedIn allows you to apply for jobs through the website. Along with being an efficient way to send in your application, the website also allows you to track the jobs that you have applied to through the website. You can better manage your follow-up emails because you have the names and dates of the people you have contacted all in one place.
