Understanding My Motivations Can Help Me Get a Job that I Enjoy

Get Hired Fast - help me get a jobChanging careers can be a big undertaking. However, before you decide to leave a perfectly good position to take another in an unknown arena, you need to take a long look at your motivations. It is important to understand your reasons for leaving your career and what you are looking for at the next position; just think about how this can help me get a job that I enjoy.

Are You Prepared?

You should never just quit a job to jump into a new career without doing your homework. What do you know about the new industry that you are interested in? Are there jobs and is it a robust growing industry? Will you have to move to another state – or country – to find work? You should also look into qualifications for your new industry – are you qualified for a job in the new industry? Do you have the money to make a change right now? You have to make some assessments to figure out if this is the best time to make the jump.

What Is Your Motivation?

Understanding why you are leaving your present job for a new career is equally important. Is the new career something you have been interested in but just haven’t investigated? Or are you just angry or bored at your current position? You want to be sure that you are leaving for the right reasons or if there may be things or position changes at your present job that may answer some of your concerns.

What Are the Benefits and Drawbacks of Making a Change?

As with most big decisions, you should make a “pro” and “con” list. List the good and bad things about your new career and the good and bad about your old career. Compare them to see what your best option is.

Will the New Career More Closely Fit My Goals?

Your goals are also an important part to any career switch. Will the new position meet more of your goals? If you don’t make this determination, you may find yourself looking for another position in a year or two because you are again unfulfilled in your new position. There is little reason to move to another position that doesn’t meet your emotional needs.

Making the decision to make a drastic career change may be difficult. Sometimes you need an outside voice to help you make some important choices. A career coach may be able to help you cut through the clutter to make a decision that you will be happy with long-term.
