Where to Search for Jobs: The Best Cities for Jobs This Spring

In February, the US economy added over 200,000 jobs leading to an unemployment rate of 7.7%. The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey confirms the optimism. With all of the potential positions out there, if you want to know where to search for jobs, there are certain cities that have higher expectations for this spring, according to Forbes.

San Jose – Sunnyvale – Santa Clara, Calif/ Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, Maine

These cities tied for the title of best city for jobs this spring with an employment outlook of 23%. This takes into account the percentage of employers who plan to hire (25% and 27% respectively) and the percentage who plan to decrease workforce (2% and 4%). In the Silicon Valley, high tech jobs are continuing to improve, but other positions, like hospitality and restaurant jobs, are growing again as the economy continues to improve. Information technology, bio-science, and insurance products are the big industries in Portland, ME for the spring.

Salt Lake City, Utah/ Tucson, AZ

There was a tie for the third spot as well. Both of these cities have a net employment outlook of 22% for this spring. Salt Lake City has several large employers in health care, government, and education. Tucson is expected to have an increase in professional and business services as well as hospitality jobs.

Des Moines – West Des Moines, Iowa/ Poughkeepsie – Newburgh – Middletown, N.Y/ Richmond, VA

Ties were popular in this poll. These three metro areas all have a net employment outlook of 21%. In the Des Moines metro area, the major industries are insurance, agribusiness, and health care. In Poughkeepsie, the main industries are associated with health care and technology.

Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minn.-Wis.

This metro area has an employment outlook of 20%. The major industries in this area are biomedical services, technology financial services, and retail.

If you are looking for a job in one of these cities, you may have more options as the employers are looking to hire over the next few months. However, there are some places to avoid if you are looking for a job this spring. The Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, California area has the lowest net employment outlook of all the areas observed at 3%. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Washington was ranked as the second worst city for jobs this spring at 5%.

While these numbers do not suggest that you should automatically move to one of these cities or away from another city because it made this list, it does give you some data to use during your job search.
