Each position that you apply for needs a specific cover letter. It does take a lot of work but you want each company to believe that you would fit into their organization. You may not have to rewrite the entire letter; however, you may find that you have to rework the introduction for each one or tweak the section about your goals depending on the job.

Be Clear

Your cover letter should be short and to the point; the hiring manager does not want to read about your entire life history. Explain why you are the right person for the job and that you are interested in their goals and passions. Don’t forget to end with a note of thanks.

Include Keywords

You should include important keywords for the company’s job posting or website in your cover letter. Some organizations use those keywords to search for cover letters and resumes to review. You also want to demonstrate that you know what is important to them.

Avoid Spelling and Grammar Issues

A cover letter with grammatical errors and spelling problems will get your resume tossed into the trash bin pretty quickly. These mistakes suggest that you don’t pay attention to detail and your work product would be sloppy – meaning the company would be less likely to want you to work for them.

Personalize the Letter

Find out who the letter will be going to – research on the Internet may tell the names of the hiring managers that you need to contact. If not, you can also call the company and ask. This shows your interest in the position and also shows that you can research and find out information if needed.

Follow Up

You should add a note in your cover letter about when you plan to follow up if you have not heard back. This shows that you are serious. If you include this note, make sure that you do actually follow up.
