Currently, this website will only accept listings from companies that they vet. The Muse publishes a profile on the website and generally gathers testimonials from current employees. This information helps you search for companies by culture and environment; you can get a sense of what it would be like to work for the organization before you apply or accept a job. It is like window-shopping for your next employer.

The Daily Muse

The Daily Muse is a section that focuses on articles about careers and finding a job. These articles are written by volunteers and guest contributors who cover topics from jobs in specific industries to negotiation to business travel. Originally this section was geared to professional women – and still leans that way — but the site owners do welcome male readers. The articles may offer insight that readers may not have obtained any other way.

Job Listings

Of course there are job listings on The Muse, but they don’t look like most job sites. The listings are very attractive with classifications – like job level or location – up front. There is also a link to pictorial and video information about the specific company (the profile). There is information about life at the company, video vignettes from current employees, and pictures of the main office. You do get a full description of the open position; there is a link to the application which does not necessarily go through The Muse website.

If you find a company that you are interested in, you can find all positions available at are listed. You can also look for jobs by experience level, location, or job type. Currently there are only positions from certain participating companies on the site, but hopefully that number will increase.

Management Analyst

Management analysts help companies and other organizations improve efficiency and other processes. While it is not necessary to have an MBA to be a good consultant, many companies prefer utilizing analysts who have the degree. There were over 718,000 positions in the US in 2010 with an expected growth rate of 22% through 2020. The median salary is $76,180 but there is opportunity to earn more depending on the situation.

Human Resources

Human resource specialists help hire, recruit, and train workers; they may also be involved in employee relations, training, payroll, and benefits. With an MBA, you may be able to advance to management in the human resources department. There were over 442,000 positions in human resources in 2010;  because almost all companies have HR departments, this area is expected to grow by 21% over the next few years.  The median salary for HR specialists is $52,690; management positions may earn more.

Financial Advisor

You don’t need a master’s degree to become a financial advisor but if you want to get into management, an MBA may pave the way; it could also increase your opportunity to gain clients as well. There may be different areas in which you can work as a financial advisor such as securities, insurance, or other financial, healthcare, or technical services. There were approximately 206,800 financial advisors in 2010. BLS estimates that the field will grow by 32% which is above average. The median salary for financial advisors is $64,750; someone in management position should make more.

IT Manager

If you have an undergraduate degree in a computer science-related field, you may be able to parlay your MBA into an IT manager role. Since most large companies have computer and IT manager positions, it may be possible to find positions in a broad range of industries such as finance, manufacturing, government, and management. There were 307,900 jobs in this area in 2010. As many companies will be switching their computer systems or incorporating more of their processes into computer systems, the Bureau of Labor Statistics believes that this position will grow at 18% over the next five to seven years. This job also offers a competitive salary with median earnings of $115,780 per year.

Be Proactive

Being a college student is often a laid-back or relaxed existence; however, entering the real job world may require more proactive work. Looking for a job will require an detailed action plan; it is rare that a person gets a job without putting forth a significant amount of effort. If you want to join the ranks of those who protect and serve the public, you can use LawEnforcementJobs.com to help you find positions in law enforcement. This website lists officer positions for federal, city, county, university, and state police. There are also positions in IT and corrections as well.

Try to Get Your Record Cleared

You may be able to get your record expunged. First, you have to find out what your record is. You should find out what exactly you were convicted of and whether the information is still on your record at all. Your conviction may have been removed after a certain amount of time – but you will never know if you don’t check. If your conviction is still there, you may be able to get your record expunged or sealed. You should check with an attorney to see if this might be possible in your case. It does not make your conviction completely disappear, but it may make it difficult for employers to access it.

Volunteer Work

Another way that you may be able to improve your odds of finding employment is to look for volunteer opportunities. References may be able to get you around the black mark on your criminal record and volunteering is a good way to get references. Find a couple of organizations to work with and be active while you are there. This will allow you to build a reputation with the organization and the members may be more willing to vouch for your work ethic and trustworthiness after some months of volunteering.

There are questions about the interactions with Facebook as many people do not put all of your personal information on this networking site. Idealist.org

Idealist is a job board with nonprofit positions as well as volunteer opportunities. Companies that post positions here typically look to find solutions to social and environmental problems. Some positions that you may find on this website include jobs at FairTrade USA, the STS Foundation, or Work for Progress. The average salary for jobs at FairTrade USA is $85,000; $22,000 at the STS Foundation, and $53,000 at Work for Progress. There are a variety of jobs listed on this website which may offer a number of opportunities for you.

Opportunity Knocks

Opportunity Knocks lists nonprofit jobs and also has a nonprofit job salary report that you can purchase if you want to get some assistance on determining the going rate for a nonprofit position. The website also lists some of the best nonprofits to work for like Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties; the average salary of directors for this food bank is $128,000. Another good nonprofit company according to Opportunity Knocks is the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation where the average salary is $26,000. Other companies to consider include Fiver Children’s Foundation, Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative, and Plant with Purpose.

Encore Careers

Encore.org allows people – especially those over 60 – find rewarding jobs with both purpose and passion. The goal is to allow people to find new ways to work while offering something to the world. One of the top Encore job fields is the nonprofit sector. Your job options should include many of the skills you used in your for-profit life.

For example, if you worked as a counselor or had your own clinic, you could become a mental health counselor for a nonprofit agency (average salary $32,370). If you were an accountant, there may be opportunity for you as a Senior Grant Accountant with Non-Profit Experience (average salary of $55,000). Make Sure it is Appropriate for the Job

Every industry may not be impressed with your initiative in creating a video resume. Traditional industries may not accept it or know what to do with it; you may lose your shot with them if you are too brave. However, jobs in media, online companies, or creative professions may like video resumes because it gives the potential employer some insight into how you would fit at the company. So make sure the company would like a video resume before you submit it.

Don’t Improvise

You have to have a plan when you create a video resume. You can’t just recite your resume but you can’t release streams of consciousness on your video either. Make an outline of what you want to say and what you have to offer potential employers. Most importantly, you need to practice, practice, practice! You need to look calm and composed on your video without stumbling through your words. In other words, you want to look professional.

Be Yourself

You have to be authentic in your video resume. For one thing if you are being fake, the person watching your resume will likely be able to tell. Plus, if you do get the interview, the real you will not match the one on the video. Typically, that will lead to not getting the job.

Keep it Short

Your resume should not be an hour-long statement about your life and your hopes and dreams. The resume is a filter for recruiters so they don’t need to know your entire story. Also, no one wants to watch a long video – keep it to around two minutes at most.

Be Creative

You want to be professional but creative. You can experiment with production values or add some humor, but remember that you need to appear like you would fit in the workplace at all times.

Don’t Take it Personal

You can’t let a rejection after an interview make you think that there is a huge fundamental problem with you. Even if you are qualified for the job, a rejection just means that the hiring manager thought that someone else was a better fit for the position. Many people don’t get past the resume stage so remind yourself that you must be doing something correctly.

Get some Feedback

One of the best ways to benefit from a rejection is to find out why you were rejected. You can ask the hiring manager why you weren’t selected so you can make adjustments in future.

What did You Learn?

While you do need to incorporate feedback from the manager into your review process, you also need to do an internal review as well. Think about the steps you took – interview answers, your demeanor, your interview outfit. Was there anything that you think you could have done differently or better? Incorporating your internal feedback with the external feedback gives you plenty of room to improve moving forward.

Accept Responsibility

While you don’t want to kick yourself while you are down, you do want to accept responsibility for your role in the rejection. While doing your review, you may be able to find something that you would do differently. Accept your role in how things turned out and plan to do better in the future.

Keep it Moving

Rejection is common during a job search. You can take some time after the rejection to be sad, but you can’t let it take over your life. Don’t get mired in self-recriminations and regrets. You have to keep it moving. Get some exercise or go out with friends to help you relax and blow off a little steam. You will then be ready to dive back into your job search with renewed vigor.

Identify

It is difficult to look for the perfect job if you are not sure of what your dream job might be. Figuring out what you want to do long-term means that you will have to do a self-assessment to determine what is important to you. What do you care about? What type of life do you want to lead? Write your answers down and review them to help you clarify your thoughts.

Make Connections

Once you figure out what job you would ideally like to have, you need to make connections with people in that industry. Having a mentor can help you learn more about the job and the industry that you want to enter. You can find connections by asking friends and colleagues or looking on the Internet. Blogs or other social media is a good place to start; you can start getting your name out there. This can be a slow process though, so be patient.

Slow Movement is Acceptable

Dream jobs do not typically drop into your lap; it may be a slow process. So you have to recognize that while you may have to do other things to help you prepare for your dream position, as long as you are making progress, it is positive. Steadily working gets you closer to your goal.

Be Realistic

You have to be clear that it may take a while to get your dream job. You may have to make some detours on your job journey. You also have to be clear that even if you get your dream job, it won’t be perfect. There may be issues within your job that you may not like or enjoy; there may be times that you don’t want to go work. The goal is to want to go to work more days than you don’t.
